Using a Pick

A guitar pick is a small object that you use to pick the strings of your guitar. You can play the guitar with your bare fingers, in fact, some styles encourage it. In the beginning, though, it is a good idea to use a pick. The most common type looks like a small plastic teardrop.

To hold the pick, grasp the fat rounded end between the thumb and first finger of your right hand. Notice in the picture how the thumb is straight while the first finger is bent?
