The Musical Alphabet

   One of the first steps in learning music is to review something you were taught in kindergarten. (You didn’t know you started on your musical journey way back then, did you?) All written music is based on the English Alphabet. You know, A-B-C-D...?

 Try saying the whole alphabet.  Can you do it?  Here it is, just as a reminder.

               A B C D E F G H I J K L M N
       O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z

     Now, say the first seven letters.  These first seven letters are very important to musicians because music is based on these first seven letters of the alphabet. These seven letters are called the Musical Alphabet
         Here are the letters in the Musical Alphabet.
                           A  B C  D E  F G
     Say the Musical Alphabet out loud several times. Now try saying it backwards. That is a little harder, isn’t it? 
           Here is the Musical Alphabet backwards.
                     G  F E  D C  B A
     Practice it backwards until you can say it quickly and without hesitation.  It is important to be able to say the Musical Alphabet forward and backwards.  After you have learned the Musical Alphabet, teach it to a friend.  Have tham say it forward and backward.  Listen to them stutter and sputter! Better yet, learn to say the whole alphabet backwards!
